Chapter Twelve

"Vivienne! Vivienne!” Daniel pounded on her front door. He checked the time, hurried to her bedroom window, and looked in.

Through a very slight crack in the blinds, he could see her feet on the bed. “Shit! Vivienne! Vivienne!” he screamed. Petrified when she didn't move he began looking around the ground for something. He found a large rock and picked it up, smashing it against the glass. It splintered and he expected the alarm to sound, but it never did. Reaching inside, turning the lock and cutting his hand, he pried the window up and climbed in. “Viv! Viv!” He shook her to wake her and found her very groggy. He reached for the phone and dialed nine-one-one. “Hello! Yes, this is Daniel Dillon. I'm at my girlfriend's house and she's unconscious. Yes, the address is,” he rattled it off as he looked down at her in anxiety. “Yes, hurry.” He hung up, grabbed her around her waist, and sat her up seeing her eyes opening slightly. “Viv! Viv!"

"Daniel?"

"Oh, thank God. Viv. What's happened?"

"Nothing's happened. I was sleeping. Why are you here?” She looked around the room in confusion.

"Sleeping? Viv, no one's been able to get in touch with you for three whole days!"

"Three days? That's insane.” She checked her watch and looked at him. “What day is today?"

"It's Friday. Viv, the last time I spoke to you was when I called your office on Tuesday. Where have you been?"

"Been? I've been here. I haven't gone anywhere. What do you mean it's Friday? I have tons of things to do at work.” She stood up and looked around in confusion. “Why is my window broken?"

"I had to break it to get in. I was knocking at your door, calling you, and I even pounded on the window and you didn't move.

What was I to do? I thought you were ill."

A siren wailed, coming closer.

"I called the ambulance when you wouldn't wake up."

"You did what? Daniel!” she moaned. “Great! Well, go and tell them I'm a sound sleeper."

"Let them check you out."

"For what? Daniel, this is really over the top. Look at my damn window!"

"I'll get someone to fix it. Viv, you have to understand how worried I was. Your mother and father didn't hear from you either.

They're worried sick."

"Why did you upset them? Daniel, you didn't need to upset them."

"Oh, God, Viv, I wish you'd see it from my point of view."

The medics pounded the front door. She glared at Daniel and stormed over to it. They rushed in and looked around. “I'm sorry, guys, you came for nothing. I was just sleeping."

"No,” Daniel insisted, “Please, look her over. I was pounding the door and window and she was out cold. At least let them check you out, Viv."

"This is absurd.” She shook her head as the paramedics wrapped a BP cuff around her biceps and checked her temperature at the same time.

Daniel went to the phone and dug out the number for her parents from his pocket. While the medics were busy, he called them quickly.
